I’m rounding up the 40-plus images for my book

It’s February and I am back at Commencement Bayhome. I’m rounding up the 40-plus images that will accompany the text of Tahoma: The Place and Its People. Working with photographers, artists, and other experts to assemble the photos, maps, and drawings is both a daunting challenge and an exhilarating joyride.

Two of the key contributors are visual artists Lucia Harrison and Kirsten Wahlquist. Lucia and I taught about Mount Rainier together at The Evergreen State College, including 10-day field trips with 50 students (yes, we were crazy). For Tahoma, she’s creating a pen and ink drawing for each chapter to capture the mountain’s personality from that area. Her draft for the Cascade Range Active Volcanoes sketchPuyallup River chapter gives you a feel for her work.

Kirsten’s a graphic artist and scientific illustrator who created a few images for the geology chapter about six years ago. She’s working on 15 images for the book, including this one of the Cascade Range major volcanoes. But I think she’s most excited about drawing the Chinook salmon life cycle and some of the insects that inhabit decomposing logs! You can see those sketches on my Book page. Check out her portfolio at http://www.illustratorkirsten.com/index.html.
